Winter Favorites

This post was last updated on January 28th, 2019

Winter has officially started, and even here in Athens, temperatures are dropping. These are some of my favorite products this winter so far:

Nikon D3300

I mentioned in my Holiday Wish List that I was planning on getting the Nikon D3300 in red. I ended up getting the black one, and maybe that was a better choice. I obviously used it quite a bit on my recent trip to Rome, so check out my Rome sneak peek for some first pictures I took with it. I have a lot to learn about how to use it, and I’m very happy that I got it.

Too Faced – Born This Way Foundation in Ivory

Too Faced is one of the few major cruelty-free makeup brands that are easily accessible here in Greece. Before you say anything, I know that animal testing for cosmetics has been banned in the European Union for several years now, so, technically, you can purchase any kind of cosmetic product made in the EU knowing that it was not tested on animals. However, countries such as China, actually require animal testing, and many companies that sell products not tested on animals in the EU have their products tested on animals in China in order to be able to sell them there. China is a big market, and most companies are not willing to give up that kind of money. For this reason, many vegans boycott those companies even if the products that are sold in the EU were not tested on animals. This is definitely a topic for another blog post.
The Born This Way foundation is also vegan. You can find out which Too Faced products are vegan when you check out the ingredient lists on their website. It always mentions if a product is vegan. Born This Way is a medium coverage foundation, but when you layer it, you should be able to achieve full coverage. It’s infused with coconut water and is oil-free which helps to create a more matte look.

Real Techniques – Multitask Set

Everybody and their mother has been raving about Real Techniques brushes since they first came out in 2011. All their brushes are cruelty-free and vegan as they are all made of synthetic fibers. This is a limited edition set which includes a multitask face brush, a multitask cheek brush, and a multitask eye brush. I use the face brush for powder and the cheek brush for highlighter. They’re really soft and fluffy and are excellent for placing the product exactly where you want.

Saponaria – Face Serum

Saponaria is a Greek brand based on the island of Crete which only uses natural ingredients. Their range consists of several soaps in cute little bags and different oils and balms. In the winter my skin gets quite dry, and this face serum really helps to moisturize my skin, so I use it in the morning and at night. You really only need a few drops for your whole face and neck (I use about 5-6 drops each time), so the small bottle will last you for quite a long time. Saponaria products are made with pure essential oils and don’t contain any preservatives, chemicals, or synthetic perfumes, additives, or, colors. Many of their products, including this face serum, are vegan, and all are handmade.

Dr. Organic – Organic Moroccan Argan Oil Hair Treatment Serum

In the winter, I have to blow dry my hair after washing it. As soon as it gets warm enough I ditch all heat styling, but in the winter that’s simply not possible, so I need something to make sure the heat doesn’t completely destroy my hair. This serum by Dr. Organic makes my hair feel soooo incredibly soft, and it smells really nice as well. Since I started using this I have experienced absolutely no breakage in my hair. As the texture of this serum is quite thick but silky you need very, very little, so the bottle lasts forever. I use one pump after blow drying my hair and another two pumps on day two.
Dr. Organic products contain no harsh chemicals and are not tested on animals. Most of their products are vegan.

Mademoiselle YéYé – Lovely Cardigan in Red

In the winter, layering is the most important part of staying warm. Here in Athens, it can be quite mild even in the winter so wearing layers that you can remove is essential. This cardigan by Mademoiselle YéYé has been my absolute favorite this fall and winter. It’s quite thick and made of 100% cotton. Red is one of my favorite colors, and the lip pattern adds a vibrant touch. This cardigan is really nice with dresses as well, though my dresses have been hidden away these last few months due to the colder temperatures.
Mademoiselle YéYé is a German brand that produces all clothes under ethical conditions in the European Union. Their clothes are vegan and certified to be free of harmful substances.

Avalon Organics – Nourishing Lavender Hand & Body Lotion

Moisturizing is important in any season, but in the winter my skin gets particularly dry. Many body lotions leave a film on the skin which is quite annoying and makes you feel like you have to wait for ages until you can put on your clothes. This hand and body lotion by Avalon Organics is different. Even though it makes the skin feel hydrated it never feels like it’s too much. Lavender has a very relaxing effect and is one of my favorite scents.
Avalon Organics is a completely cruelty-free brand and almost all their products are vegan. The brand focuses on sustainable packaging and supports the education of girls in developing countries.
