There are so many types of trips mothers and daughters can take together, and it all depends on their interests. Not every mother-daughter trip has to turn into a mother-and-daughter spa weekend. Whethere you’re adventure lovers, city trippers, or shopping queens, there are plenty of vacation ideas for mother-and-daughter pairs.
That’s why, in this post about the best mother-daughter trips in the USA and across the world, I’m including a variety of choices including shopping getaways, mother-daughter beach vacations, adventure journeys, and city trips. I will list accommodation options for weekend mother-daughter trips on a budget as well as more high-end choices for a total of 39 destinations.
Mother-Daughter Weekend Trips in North America
There are a ton of options for good mother-daughter trips in North America, but I can only pick a few of them. So from great mother-daughter trips in the US to Canada and Mexico, here are some options.
New Orleans, USA
Is there a US city more mysterious and exciting than New Orleans? All over the world, the city is fabled for its music, food, and culture. Mardi Gras might be an interesting choice if you’re looking for fun mother-daughter trips in the US. But even if you travel to New Orleans at any other time Creole culture is certainly going to put a spell on you. New Orleans should definitely be on your list of fun mother-daughter weekend trips.
If you’re at all interested in the esoteric or occult, you might be able to make some interesting purchases related to the history of voodoo in the city. Do keep in mind however that religion is a sensitive and private topic and not something to be used as an accessory. Don’t buy gimmicky products that poke fun at or stereotype voodoo.

Luckily, there’s no need to worry about the availability of vegan food in New Orleans. Check out this vegan guide to New Orleans to find the best food spots.

New York City, USA
Let’s be honest here, New York City is probably the one place anyone who’s not from North America wants to visit in the US. But even if you’re already in North America looking for mother-daughter weekend trip ideas “the capital of the world” will be an extraordinary experience. Of course, a weekend can never be enough for all the sights this enormous city has to offer, but it’s a start.
Mother-and-daughter duos will particularly enjoy the museums, the views from the cool rooftop bars, and all the amazing vegan restaurants. Don’t forget to watch a Broadway show as well to turn this into one of those cool mother-daughter trips you will be able to talk about for years to come. If you’re into dancing why not learn Salsa in the city where it first emerged? This NYC Salsa Class is open to people of all levels. If Jazz is more your thing you may want to consider joining this Evening Harlem Jazz Tour.
If you stayed up late you can take it slowly the next day and relax at one of the many beautiful parks in the city. New York City is a special destination so be careful, this city might spoil subsequent mother-and-daughter trips in the US.

As accommodation in New York is notoriously expensive you should at least make sure to get quality for what you’re paying.

Quebec City, Canada
As shameful as it is, I have to admit that while I lived in Montreal I never actually made it to Quebec City. Don’t make this mistake. If you live somewhere in North America and are looking for mom-daughter getaway ideas, Quebec City is the closest thing you can get to a trip to Europe. The city’s fabulous architecture earned it a spot on the UNESCO World Heritage site list making it one of the best cultural mother-daughter trips in Canada.

If being surrounded by a foreign language is the best thing to put you in a travel mood, then you’ll enjoy being surrounded by Québecois in the province’s capital. The city is the perfect destination for mothers and daughters who are into culture, art, cute cafés, and history.
For a great view of the city, take this Quebec City Sightseeing Cruise. And don’t worry about the food in the city either. Of course, it’s entirely possible to eat vegan in Quebec City as well.

The town itself has become a hot spot for eco-conscious travelers with sustainable resorts, mother-daughter weekend retreats, and plenty of vegan food options, plus it’s a street art heaven. Tulum also has spas if you’re looking for mother-and-daughter spa breaks.
With all that said, it’s clear that Tulum has to be included in any list of mother-daughter trip ideas.

Victoria, Canada
Ever since a friend of mine moved to British Columbia I’m simply in awe of all the nature activities she gets to do. If you and your mother or daughter are big fans of lush landscapes and impressive mountains then BC is the perfect destination for a mother-daughter weekend trip. You could either do exciting things like hiking, skiing, and biking in nature, or, if you’re more into relaxation in a nature setting, then there are excellent spas in this Canadian province. No matter what type of trip you choose make sure you take in the breathtaking views.

In Victoria you can do adventurous things such as whale watching, so it should be high on your list of fun mother-daughter trips. This Whale Watching Tour is offered by ethical tour operators who don’t get too close to the whales and are actual scientists who study these magnificent animals. If wildlife isn’t exactly your thing there’s also enough to see in Victoria for people who are into culture. For the best vegan food in Victoria check out this vegan guide to Victoria.

Washington, D.C., USA
The capital of the US is not a typical tourist destination for foreign visitors, but if you’re already based in the country you’ll probably appreciate a visit to your capital to learn more about its history. Washington, D.C. is home to various important monuments that tell the story of the USA. Likewise, the city is home to several interesting museums you can get lost in.

If you want to indulge in nature then make sure you visit during cherry blossom season (and do read these beautiful cherry blossom quotes before you go)! Washington, D.C. has a very high ratio of parks so you can easily balance all the sightseeing with visits to beautiful spots like Rock Creek Park, Roosevelt Island, Kenilworth Park, the National Arboretum, or Meridian Hill Park.

Weekend Trips for Mother-Daughter Duos in Europe
Whether you’re looking for Mother’s Day trip ideas or places to take your mom for her birthday there are destinations all over Europe that are particularly suitable for mothers and daughters. With such a small region you don’t even have to travel far for a mother-daughter weekend away from your usual surroundings.
Algarve, Portugal
If you’re based in Europe or North Africa and are looking for the best mother-daughter weekend getaways on the beach Portugal’s Algarve region is one of your best options. The clean beaches on the Atlantic Ocean make Portugal’s south its most popular tourist destination. So if you want to relax on the beach the Algarve should be at the top of your list.
Hiking is another popular activity in the region and will reward you with magnificent views. And don’t worry, you won’t have to starve either: Check out this vegan food guide to the Algarve to know where to eat.

Budapest, Hungary

Hungary’s capital makes for one of the best city breaks in all of Europe. The city is both elegant as well as quirky, historic as well as modern. The grandiose architecture transports you back into the Austro-Hungarian Empire but also shows the struggles of Hungary’s Communist past.
Don’t miss a walk along the impressive Danube river, and make sure you cross between Buda and Pest using one of the many bridges. Or opt for this Danube River Evening Cruise to see the city’s main sights from the river. If you want to catch a bit of relaxation out in nature, head to Margaret Island with its beautiful parks.
Looking for mother-daughter weekend spa getaways? Perhaps the best part about Budapest are the numerous spas the city is known for. Why not treat yourself and your mother or daughter to a different spa every day? Surprisingly, Budapest is also incredibly vegan-friendly. Find out more in my vegan Budapest guide.
If you’re looking for mother-daughter trips on a budget, Budapest is one of your best choices. Most things are incredibly cheap in Hungary’s capital compared to the rest of Europe, and even your mother-daughter spa getaways will be more affordable here.

London, UK
London is without a doubt one of the most multicultural cities in the world, and thus a particularly suitable destination if you’re concerned about racism in other European destinations, but also if you want to have a great mother-daughter getaway with as much variety as possible. Whether you have a typical English afternoon tea experience, go for Ethiopian dinner, have lunch at a Japanese vegan sushi place, or taste flavorful South Asian dishes, London has all of that. Find out more about traveling as a vegan in London before you arrive.

And don’t worry about London’s reputation as an expensive city: Many museums in London are free meaning you can actually spend an entire weekend spending money on nothing aside from accommodation, food, and transport!
But if you’re okay with spending some money here and there by all means take advantage of all the live shows that happen in London. The music scene in the UK’s capital is extremely vibrant, and there is something for every taste and budget.

My mother and I have been to Paris together more than once, and I think it’s truly an underrated destination for mother-daughter pairs. Sure, the city has a reputation for romance, but that’s only the surface. The French capital has so much more to offer placing it high on my list of ideas for great mother-daughter vacations.

Paris offers tons of sightseeing options, restaurants for different budgets, as well as shopping opportunities if that’s what you and your mother or daughter bond over. Make sure to take in the views from Montmartre – yes, it’s crowded with tourists, but it’s one of the best places for mother-daughter trips and is really worthy of the attention it receives.
Don’t forget to bring your camera and enough SD cards and maybe even consider joining a private photography tour with a professional photographer to capture your most amazing memories. Check out this vegan Paris guide to silence your fears about eating vegan in France’s capital.

If you’re not yet convinced about Rome as a destination for mother-and-daughter trip ideas keep in mind that the coolest thing about Rome is that you get to visit another country as well, the Vatican City, which is located in Rome’s city center and home to a few must-see sights.
Make sure you take your time in the Eternal City, as one of the best things about it is to simply stroll around and take in all the different views and vibes. Perhaps you’ll even happen across a traditional market and buy some ingredients to recreate your favorite Italian dishes.

Kyoto, Japan
Kyoto invites you to see a more traditional side of Japan. One that may not be featured on the news anymore where everything is about high-tech, quirkiness, and the megalopolis that is Tokyo. Kyoto is a fantastic idea for those looking for more cultural mom-and-daughter trips.

There’s an enormous amount of things to see in Kyoto, so one of the best ways to make sure you don’t miss anything is to join this e-bike tour of Kyoto which includes both well-known sights as well as less famous attractions.
Public baths are a cornerstone of Kyoto’s culture so make sure you schedule a visit to an onsen, such as Funaoka Onsen, one of the oldest bathing houses in the city. Another way to relax is to join this guided zen meditation and Japanese garden tour. While I am critical of using religious and cultural practices as tourist attractions, I believe that a 2.5 hour guided tour and explanation is a great way to truly learn about the local culture and not simply exotify it.
With all these things to do in Kyoto don’t worry, you can definitely survive as a vegan in the city. Have a look at this vegan Kyoto guide before you go.

You don’t even need to know Arabic to get around the city, as French is still widely spoken as a result of colonization, though English is less common. Whether you want to observe the bustling life in the main square, taste delicious food, or get a serious dose of relaxation at a hammam, Marrakesh is a great choice for mother and daughter duos who are curious and want to experience life the way the local population does. But the hammams alone would make it perfect if you’re looking for mother-daughter retreats.
Vegans might have a hard time in Marrakesh due not only to the abuse of animals like monkeys and snakes as tourist attractions, but also in terms of the food. Luckily, you can consult this vegan Marrakesh guide to find your best food options.

Tanzania

A country that is surely on many people’s lists to visit is the gorgeous East African nation of Tanzania. Whether you want to go on a safari or spend your days in the magical Zanzibar you can do so many things in Tanzania.
Tanzania is home to some of the most alluring beaches in the world – think white sand, palm trees, and the beautiful Indian Ocean. This also makes scuba diving a memorable activity rewarding you with picturesque underwater views. If you’re new to the experience you can book this introductory scuba diving lesson on Tumbatu Island in the Zanzibar archipelago.
When shopping for souvenirs forego the masks sold on market which usually have no connection to East African culture and instead invest in a Tingatinga painting. You can even book this Tingatinga tour where you learn about the history of the style and see the artists create magnificent pieces of art.

Mother-Daughter Getaway Weekend Destinations in Oceania
A lot of mother-daughter trip posts forget about destinations in Oceania, but the region has plenty of places to go for mother-daughter trips as well.
French Polynesia, France
Granted, French Polynesia is not a weekend destination for most of the world, but if your departure airport is Auckland then it’s a mere 5-hour flight to Papeete. If you want to be completely isolated from the rest of the world and relax on pristine beaches then French Polynesia is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

This would be a great place to look for mother-daughter resort vacations, and you can nourish your body with natural pineapple and orange juice, as well as coconut water. For actual vegan food check out this vegan food guide for Tahiti.
There are obviously tons of fish to see in the water so make sure you join this Fakarava Scuba Diving Tour and marvel at the beautiful life underwater.

Hawaii, USA
Adventure lovers probably put Hawaii at the top of good places for mother-daughter trips due to its lush green landscape and mountains. The picture-perfect beaches will make any mother-daughter duo relax instantly.
Hawaii is pretty much only a feasible weekend destination for people located on the US West Coast, but I thought it was still worth mentioning because the landscapes are simply out of this world. I was a major fan of the tv show Lost which made me fall in love with Hawaii. If you and your mother or daughter love either hiking, watersports, or simply lying on the beach you will absolutely love it there.
Although the food is very meat-centric there are some ways to be vegan in Hawaii, but it’s important to be prepared.

Sydney, Australia

Australia’s biggest and most well-known city is the perfect location for travelers who want to experience culture, food, but also a bit of nature and adventure outside of the city center. Sydney is one of the best mother-daughter vacation spots for people in Australia or New Zealand whether you’re looking for Mother’s Day getaways or birthday gifts.
There is a lot to see in Sydney, but luckily you can find most of it, such as the Sydney Opera House, the Sydney Tower, and the Art Gallery of New South Wales, in the city center. The Sydney Harbour is one of the world’s most recognizable sights, and you can see it both from the city, by boat, or by helicopter.
The city also has a great scene for live music so make sure to check if there are any artists you would like to see while there. And don’t forget to check out this list of vegan eateries in Sydney so you can have the best foodie experience.

June 20, 2021 at 5:20 pmSuch a helpful list with great recs around the world! I’ve never actually been on a mother-daughter trip – can you believe it?! I’d love to go to New Orleans, Algarve, the Turks and Caicos, and Tanzania with her. My mom actually studied in Germany for a bit and also speaks German, so I’d think she’d love to travel back there one day!
Super appreciate this list and the vegan resources linked, plus the tips on how to support locals!
